The game
What is walking football?
The same game, at a pace that suits everyone.
How it works
Walking football is a smaller-sided version of association football in which players walk rather than run. The fundamental rule is simple: if you run, you give away a free kick. Everything else — passing, dribbling, shooting, goalkeeping — remains the same.
Games are normally played on a reduced-size pitch with smaller teams, making the game more accessible and less physically demanding while still requiring skill, awareness and teamwork. The game is non-contact or limited-contact, depending on the competition rules being applied.
Walk, don’t run
Running results in a free kick. Walking pace keeps the game accessible and enjoyable for all.
Non-contact
Physical contact is minimised, making the game safer and more suitable for a wider range of players.
Smaller-sided
Smaller teams on a reduced pitch means more involvement, more passes and more fun for everyone.
Who is it for?
Walking football was developed to give older players a way to continue playing football and to encourage people who have never played to give the game a go. It is suitable for:
- Former players who can no longer safely play the full running game.
- People returning to football after a long break or after injury.
- Those looking for a social, active hobby with a mix of fitness and fun.
- Anyone who has never played football before but wants to give it a try.
At Gosport Walking Football Club, men aged 50 and over and women aged 40 and over are welcome. No previous walking football experience is required.
The benefits
Research has shown that regular walking football can improve cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination, mental wellbeing and social connection. Many players find the social aspect just as valuable as the physical activity.
